8 Tracks: Of Joyous Modular Synth Introductions With Datach’i

Richard’s been making modular videos for quite some time now. You’ll find loads of inspirational videos on his Vimeo channel that range from sparse sound design focused landscapes with gestural events to complex beat oriented alien abduction jams and then there’s his more mellow melodic pieces. This is one of my favorites by him and has this feel to it that reminds me of still heat. If you like this track also check out Plaid’s “Do Matter” and Boards of Canada’s “Reach for the Dead”, all these tracks have got that still heat vibe and play nice back to back.

I love the pure, angry, disjointed rhythmic and tonal structure that Surachai has going on in this one. He’s amazing at doing focused works out of singular ideas such as his album ‘Instinct and Memory’ which was focused around abusing the L-1 stereo micro compressor module and another one called ‘Ritual’ that is entirely made on the Cwejman S1MKII semi modular. If you see him give him a kiss and say it was from me.

An awesome performance here by Mr. Derrick which is pretty definitive of his style. He’s really into dogs and lasers and as you can see there’s some great laser zap action happening in this. He also tends to program his rhythms to have short bursts of complex patterns followed by nice gaps of space to allow for other elements of musicality to flow through which compliments the heavy shredding.

All of Owen’s demo videos are great though this one in particular I really like. There’s a great rhythm, textures and vibe happening. I love the hands off approach, allowing for full generative modular control. I’ve heard stories about Owen, his showing up to gigs drunk with his modular, turning things on and creating patches in real time during the performance. Impressive!

I love Peter’s patches. Peter’s patches, Peter’s patches, Peter’s patches. That’s hard to say many times in succession… Amyway a lot of his patches are designed around a specific intent or idea, all of which are very clever. Check out this one where he simulates rain falling on different surfaces. There’s also ones where he makes the modular scream like a pig. Fun!

Once a wormhole opened in Aaron’s studio, I’m not surprised considering what he gets into in there. Luckily though the wormhole has since closed and allowed him to get back to creating all sorts of things of awesomeness. He’s got such a definitive style that is both all around very expressive and full of personality. This is a performance from his ‘Traditional Synthesizer Music’ album that’s quite impressive. It’s like a mix of his Venetian Snares and Last Step projects but done on modular.

This is probably my favorite Serge video I’ve seen. While Serge modulars are mostly demonstrated for their cutting angular texture capabilities, David really coaxed a lot of emotion out of the beast that is the Serge.

What’s going on with my posture here? Is this normal? I feel normal.
