8 Tracks: Of Remixes Headman Didn’t Make

Headman is the owner and founder of Relish, a label which has been progressive and forward thinking since 2005. However, everyone has an influence and everyone has to take inspiration from somehwere. We caught up with Robi aka Headman who in his words describes his contribution to our influences series:

"I decided to select only music from the past. It’s not my all time favourite list, as it’s hard to pick only 8 remixed tracks. But I wanted to select a few remixes that where important and inspiring and I believe they don’t sound dated. From periods of time when the music and style were great!"

Burnundi Black - Burundi Black - First Part (Rusty Egan & J.P.Illiesco Remix)

I’m a big Fan of all things retro, i like the whole Blitz thing and the way the music was mixed. This version came out in 81, there was so much good stuff happening in 81 musically speaking. It was just coming out of New romantic and going in to a more funky kind of sound.

Sheer Taft - Cascades (Hypnotone Mix)

I was always a fan of the Balearic sound it had a big influence in the early Manhead sound. This is a Remix that i have in my collection since many years. It is more sample based, but that gives the sound a special feel. Imagine hearing this in Ibiza when it was just released.
A Split Second - Flesh (33 Rpm +8% Speed)

New Beat is another very important musical genre, if you want to put this track into a category. A time when people gathered for pure hedonism. Style was also very important. You had to wear the right Jacket, right Bandana and the right Jeans.
Section 25 - Looking From A Hilltop (Megamix)

Factory is one of my all-time favourite labels. This is a great example of a Megamix, conceived for the club.
Kraftwerk - Tour De France (Remix François K.)

This is a remix i always like and like to play in between sets. It is proto Techno and extremely funky! The way he stripped the track down and used the vocals. It was also a big influence in the nascent HIp-Hop scene!
Units - The Right Mix

I’m a big Units fan. Having been releasing High Pressure days first in 2009 and now again as a Dub on my Reworks Album was a great honour. This Mix it’s more a version of the Band, but still i see it as a remixed or alternative club version. It is another great example of how the sounds were used in the studio. perfect mix of synths drum machines and really interments.
Tubeway Army - Are Friends Electric? (Renegade Soundwave '91 Remix) (1991)

I was a big Renegade Soundwave fan. This version is also another great example of early ’90 use of samples. The combination of Gary Newman’s synths and RS breaks makes it unique.
