Influences: Fred P

Music

A shining beacon of soulful deep house, Fred P's sets always radiate with humbleness and positive energy, and his Influences picks carry the same sort of vibes. If music is a universal language, this is never more apparent than when reading Fred's choices – it's more of an extended expression of gratitude than a simple list. From Juan Atkins and Jeff Mills to Kirk Degiorgio and David Alvarado, get stuck in over to the side:

Fred P plays Secretsundaze Bank Holiday Party, 29th May at Oval Space and The Laundry.

Reagenz - Keep Building

Jonah Sharp and Move D’s music is highly influential for me as I am deeply in love with their ability to convey emotion with textures. Groovy yet unorthodox methods they employ in ways that totally captivate me and drive me to keep building and learning to expand musically.

  • Kirk Degiorgio (As One) - Meridian

His artistry is beyond genre, from techno to nu jazz to soul. One of my favourites is his work as The Beauty Room. However his work under the As One moniker again touches a emotional chord with me. ‘Meridian’ is the perfect example of emotion, mood and communicating a universal message. I have learned a great deal from Mr. Degiorgio.

  • 4 Hero & Ursula Rucker - Loveless

Words cannot describe how deeply Dego and Marc Mack have inspired me. This project again showed me that you can go way outside the box yet be relevant in today’s ever changing climate.

  • P'Taah - Flying High

Chris Brann is a amazing artist who went beyond genre and created masterpieces that astound. From Ananda Project to Wamdu Kids his catalogue is expressive. For me his work under the P’Taah moniker was a game changer and influences me to this day. ‘Flying High’ touched my life in a profound way and is a reminder of where I was and where I am now.

  • Juan Atkins (Infiniti) - Game One

Without question the godfather of techno music Juan Atkins needs no introduction. His music has led me to look to the future and beyond. Musically he is unparalleled and gives a universal message that has reached me and the world many times over. His Infinti project has led me to expand and dream beyond limitations. A true genius and amazing talent. Thank you Mr. Atkins.

  • John Beltran - Sensual Healing

My good friend Jay Locke put me on to John Beltran in the early years. I have been moved by his music ever since. Good music has the ability to conjure memories and those memories transport you to that time. I often reflect on the power of music. Mr. Beltran’s music embodies this quality in so many ways. A true artist in every way. Thank you John.

  • Jeff Mills - Gamma Player

There are no words to accurately describe Mr. Mills’ contribution to modern music. All I can say is his work has not just influenced me but several generations. Again there is no parallel. Mr. Mills is in a class of his own and I have learned to be true to your vision from his incredible output over the years. Jeff Mills is a true master of his craft.

  • David Alvarado - Devotional

The term ‘Deep’ these days pretty much gets lost in translation. For me it means a state of being. A state of ever expansion beyond the mundane, beyond the norm, moving into the totality. I came into contact with Mr. Alvarado’s work at a underground party in New York’s Lower East Side. The party was called Hamsa. This is where my love for ‘Deep’ music was fed. Every time I heard ‘Devotional’ – one of my favourites of his – I was transported. I saw visions. My mind was forever opened.

  • Carl Craig - Science Fiction

His work has spanned many genres and his influence on me led me to create what I feel. A true artist does this by virtue of being true to themselves. Mr. Craig’s catalogue is unsurpassed and defies stereotypes and exceeds expectation. I have been moved by his output for many years and have learned so many things from his music. Definitely one of the premier artists of the 20th/21st century.

  • Dj Disciple - Keep On Movin

I would listen to his show on 89.1 FM every Thursday evening and record it so I would have music for the week. I discovered Kerri Chandler, Casio Ware and countless others. This was before I ever collected a record. I saw him at a loft party once back then. He was putting it down and totally rocked the party. It was a highly influential moment for me. To this day I will never forget it.
